Phacoemulsification is a modern cataract surgery technique used to remove a cloudy lens from the eye, which is replaced with a clear artificial intraocular lens (IOL). During the procedure, the surgeon makes a small incision in the cornea and inserts a tiny probe that emits ultrasound waves to break up the cataract into small fragments. These fragments are then suctioned out of the eye, leaving the lens capsule intact. Once the cataract is removed, the IOL is implanted to restore clear vision. Phacoemulsification is a minimally invasive procedure with a quick recovery time and is the most common method of cataract surgery due to its high success rate, minimal discomfort, and reduced risk of complications. Most patients experience significant improvement in their vision shortly after the surgery.
